Didi Hirsch Hosts 17th Annual Alive & Running 5K Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention

Didi Hirsch dedicated its 17th Annual Alive & Running 5K Walk/Run on Sept. 27 to Dr. Norman L. Farberow, 97, who died earlier in the month from complications from a fall. With more than 2,100 participants and volunteers, the record-breaking event held near Los Angeles International Airport raised about $325,000 for the agency’s Suicide Prevention Center, which was co-founded by Dr. Farberow and was the first in the nation.

Suicide Prevention's Founding Father Dies on World Suicide Prevention Day

With heavy hearts, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services announces that Dr. Norman L. Farberow, co-founder of its world-renowned Suicide Prevention Center, died September 10 on World Suicide Prevention Day—a day that would not have been possible without him.

"Dr. Farberow changed people’s attitudes toward suicide. He understood that people considering suicide were in terrible pain and how much compassionate listening can help people in distress,” said Didi Hirsch’s President/CEO Dr. Kita Curry.

Comedian Wendy Liebman emceed the event, which included performances by Mary Lambert and The Reverend Shawn Amos. 

The event also featured a moving presentation that included a student, a marketing director, a transit official, a legal scholar and an author who talked about overcoming the stigma of mental illness.

Announcing the honorees for Erasing the Stigma!

On the evening of Thursday, April 23, 2015, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services will honor these courageous men and women who have helped erase the stigma of mental illness:

Ryan Anderson is an NBA standout and New Orleans Pelicans forward, who became a suicide prevention advocate following the devastating loss of his girlfriend, actress/model Gia Allemand. Ryan will be honored with a Leadership Award.

Didi Hirsch Glendale Celebrates Renovation Project

Didi Hirsch Glendale unveiled its Michael D. Antonovich building during a community celebration on Jan. 21 that drew more than 100 guests including politicians, civic leaders, and mental health providers. The celebration, which included jazz music, Porto’s pastries, tours, speeches and cake bearing the likeness of the facility, honored Michael D. Antonovich, mayor of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, who championed the $1.7 million project.
